Third Reich City Bike Tour
A bicycle tour is a good way to find out which traces the 12 years of Nazi dictatorship and World War II left in Berlin. You will see the impressive Holocaust Memorial and the site of Hitler’s bunker. Nazi architect Albert Speer planned a monumental reconstruction of Berlin which he called “World Capital Germania”. There are still some enormous buildings left from this era, including Goering’s Ministry of Aviation and the building of former Tempelhof airport. Nowadays the airport has been turned into a park and the runways provide excellent bicycle lanes.

The tour starts and ends at Alexanderplatz. From there it will take you to buildings that date back to the 1930s when the Nazis had already seized power: The Reichsbank and Goering’s Ministry of Aviation (nowadays used by Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance). You will visit the exhibition “Topography of Terror” on the site of former SS and Gestapo headquarters and ride down Wilhelmstrasse where most of the Nazi ministries as well as the infamous Chancellery of the Reich were located. You will see the site of Hitler’s bunker where he committed suicide in 1945 and walk the field of steles at the Holocaust Memorial. The next stop will be at the Resistance Memorial. This is where during World War II the headquarters of the Wehrmacht were located and leading army officers planned the assassination of Hitler. When their plan failed, the protagonists of this attempt were executed in the backyard of the headquarters (nowadays used by the Ministry of Defense). Other highlights of the tour are the former Tempelhof airport that has now been turned into a public park and a bizarre concrete object used by Albert Speer to test if the Berlin soil would hold the monumental buildings he was planning to build.
