This day tour gives you a chance to experience the palaces and gardens of Potsdam: UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1990. The tour features an interior visit of Sanssouci Palace, a walk through the gardens of Sanssouci and Cecilienhof Palace and a stroll through the old town of the city: the Dutch Quarter. Potsdam has many lakes and the river Havel runs right through the city center. Stunning and unexpected views of parks, lakes and peculiar attractions like the Dragon House in the Chinese Style, a former pumping house in the style of a mosque and even a Russian village will make this day unforgettable.
The tour starts in Berlin. On your way to Potsdam you will encounter the Wannsee lake where Berliners like to crowd the beaches in summer, the Glienicke Palace with two beautiful lion statues and the Glienicke Bridge where spies have been exchanged during the Cold War. Upon request, we can also take you to the site of the infamous Wannsee conference in 1941 or even use a ferry boat to visit Peacock Island with its unique little palace and free-ranging peacocks.
In Sanssouci Gardens we will not only visit the castle itself (closed on Mondays), but also see the tomb of Prussia’s famous king Frederick II, who built Sanssouci palace with its popular postcard motif of the terraced vineyards. Other impressive sights are the New Palace and the Orangery Palace which was built in the 19th century in the style of the Italian Renaissance.
On the tour we will visit Cecilienhof Castle where Stalin, Truman and Churchill met in 1945 to decide on Germany’s future. An interior tour of the castle can be part of the tour (closed on Mondays). According to the decisions made at the conference Potsdam belonged to the Soviet sector and a KGB prison for those suspected to sympathize with the Nazis was established.
The tour includes a lunch break in the lovely Dutch Quarter with its many small cafes and restaurants or at Krongut Bornstedt – a beautiful old Prussian building complex.
Inside visit of Sanssouci Palace
We will be pleased to organize a tour of Sansscouci palace for you. For larger groups we can book a 1,5-hour tour of the palace and its gardens in advance. For smaller groups we can buy tickets at the palace for the same day. The palace is closed on Mondays.
Inside visit of Cecilienhof Palace
It is also possible to visit the interior of Cecilienhof Palace (closed on Mondays). For larger groups we will register you for a tour of 45 minutes. Smaller groups may use audio guides without pre-registration.
For larger groups we recommend the restaurant at Krongut Bornstedt which is near the parking lot for buses at Sanssouci Palace. In this restaurant you can enjoy high-end gastronomy in the atmosphere of a historical crown estate. For smaller groups we can recommend the restaurant Alte Meierei with its lake terraces next to Cecilienhof Palace. In case you don’t wish to make a reservation in advance, you will find many recommendable cafes and restaurants in the old town.
