Shore Excursion from Warnemunde to Berlin
If you arrive at Warnemunde on a cruise ship, this is your chance to use every minute of your time. An experienced driver will meet you with a minivan at your ship and take you to Berlin. There you will meet your personal guide with whom you will have a comprehensive city tour with all the highlights and an emphasis on Berlin’s history in the 20th century. Expect, for example, a visit to the Wall Memorial, the longest remaining piece of the Wall: the East Side Gallery, the Holocaust Memorial or the sites of Hitler’s bunker. The ride in an air-conditioned minivan (for larger groups a coach will be deployed) from Warnemüunde to Berlin takes about 2.5 hours. You will meet your English-speaking guide there, and he or she will show you the highlights of Berlin on an extensive 6 hours sightseeing tour.
This tour shows you all the major sights of the city like the boulevards Kurfürstendamm and Unter den Linden, the Victory Column, the Reichstag, the TV Tower and more. The focus will be on the city’s turbulent history in the 20th century. You will see the Brandenburg Gate where the Nazi hordes marched on the day Hitler seized power and where the Berlin Wall made sure that nobody would be able to walk through it for almost 30 years. Next to the Brandenburg Gate is the Holocaust Memorial, a central place of commemoration dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. It is located in a 5-minutes walking distance from the place where Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in 1945.
Visit Checkpoint Charlie, the hot spot of the Cold War where the future of mankind was hanging on a bare thread during the tank confrontation in 1961. See remaining parts of the Wall right next to the exhibition “Topography of Terror,” where Himmler’s SS and Gestapo headquarters were located until 1945.
We will take you to the Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse where people were jumping out of their windows to escape to the West and where part of the former death strip has been turned into an open-air exhibition today. Other highlights that can be visited are, for example, the East Side Gallery (the longest remaining part of the Wall), the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park or the Olympic Stadium where the propaganda games were held in 1936.
The tour will include a lunch break and ample time for visiting one of Berlin’s museums or for shopping, if you wish to do so.
