The time between the two World Wars is called the “Golden Twenties” referring to the 1920s of the 20th century. It was a vibrant epoch and the western city center with its theaters, variety shows and restaurants was the center of Berlin’s nightlife. Today, this area is one of Berlin’s most popular shopping districts in Berlin. Around the old Memorial Church we will visit the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and the biggest department store in continental Europe – the department store of the Western or shortly KaDeWe. Discover with us this interesting district!

Tour description

130 years ago, west of Berlin, behind the zoological garden, a new district was built and called the “New West”. In the 1920s of the last century – called the Golden Twenties – amusement enthusiasts flocked to the dance halls, coffee houses, and variety shows, enthusiastically celebrating the female dancer Josephine Baker. After the war and during the time Berlin was divided by the Wall this area became the city center of West Berlin. Today, the “City West” is again an attractive residential and business location as well as a luxurious shopping area. Our tour begins at the largest department store on the European continent, the KaDeWe, and takes you to the terraces of the so-called Bikini House with a view into the zoo and of the ruins of the Memorial Church and finally to the elegant side streets of the boulevard Kurfürstendamm.

Among other sites, you will see:

KaDeWe – big department store famous for its gourmet department
Wittenbergplatz with its historical underground station
Tauentzienstrasse – the most popular shopping street in Berlin
Europacenter – with an interesting water clock: the “clock of flowing time”
Breitscheidplatz with water loops
Visit of the ruins of the Memorial Church which has been destroyed during WWII
